The U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration (ETA) commissioned the asset mapping “roadmap” to provide guidance to regions seeking to strengthen their competitive position in the global economy. Asset mapping is a critical first step in marshalling the resources that a community can leverage to support integrated workforce and economic development initiatives. The guidebook ”Asset Mapping Roadmap: A Guide to Assessing Regional Development Resources“ was published in 2007 and is designed to help regional leaders understand the theory and practice of asset mapping, make a decision about what level of asset mapping is appropriate, and provide an easy-to-use guide for implementation. The underlying objective of an asset mapping project is to reveal the region’s unique set of assets – both tangible and intangible. Using these asset maps, regional organizations can form strategic plans to achieve their economic and workforce development goals. The project objective is to map the regional assets in the Great Plains Development, Inc. (GPDI) twenty-eight county region in order to strengthen its position in the competitive global economy. In order to fulfill the project objective, AMI will undertake the asset mapping in the southwest Kansas.
